Managing Weight Loss Through Hypnosis

Nutrition Scale and Losing WeightIn the many years I’ve assisted people using hypnosis, one of the many issues I’ve helped people address are those surrounding weight loss. Besides quitting smoking, this is the single most reoccurring reason people request hypnosis consulting in my office. I’ve discovered that balancing ones busy work schedule, and maintaining a healthy focus on taking care of one’s self is a huge part of the dynamic. In addition to that, the on/off component of dieting; the “ I was good today, but cheated some later in the week” mind set erodes ones self esteem, and in my observation goes a long way to sabotaging even the best laid out plans. One of the things I seek to do is help people reframe the way they think about it. Rather than the mean spirited harsh goal oriented approach, I help them to consider it more of a process. Goals, although a great thing to have in life, tend to be organized in the mind as and event. The problem with thinking of weight loss as an event is that once you arrive at a certain level of achievement there is a tendency to revert back to the old behaviors. As one begins to consider it as a process, rather than a destination at which one ultimately arrives, it becomes much easier to manage.

Allow me to give you an example that distinguishes between an event and a process, which by the way, regardless of the circumstances is a useful one to make in life. Although cleaning your house is an event, keeping your house clean and neat is a process. I use to start in the back and clean everything until I stepped out of the front door. ” Excellent, this house is clean.” Of course, then there is a huge opportunity to micro manage every possible action that could make it messy again. This is an example of the upset of confusing a process for and event. Sound familiar ? Several other simple examples of how a process confused for an event can create upset and procrastination is mowing the yard, paying taxes. I could continue to distinguish places in our thinking where the confusion of a process for an event or an event for a process can cause us stress and upset. By the way, since our subconscious mind is a creative system, in fact the very amazing creative system that is responsible for all of the invented stuff in the world of physical reality around you, the insistence that change should occur instantly as an event is a bit silly. Remember, that little piece of magic you are holding in your hands as you consider hypnosis was once smoke signals. There was a lot of process between the pony express, morse code, and telephones, to computers inside of telephones that we carry everywhere with us. Although there were many events along the way, computers didn’t ” happen,” they were created. They were created thru process over time.

Hypnosis, which I define as the application of suggestion in trance, is a system by which an individual can tap into this marvelous deductive mechanism. It can be profoundly helpful in moving us forward towards the changes we want to make in life. In part, my work with clients in my office is both as a coach to assist people to think more clearly, and assist the individual to effectively tap into the creative process of the subconscious mind.

stop smokingIt doesn’t matter if you smoke cigarettes or not, you are likely aware of the dangers that are involved in doing so. Smoking remains the single most preventable cause of early death and it could result in many different health issues, from emphysema to heart disease and cancer. If you do smoke, the best choice you can make is to quit now. From the moment you quit, the damage that has occurred begins to reverse itself.

A number of different methods exist to give up smoking. For years, the two basic choices were to either cut down gradually or to quit “cold turkey.” People may have used a variety of substitutes, from to chewing gum to sunflower seeds but it typically met with limited success. In more recent years, people have options such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gum and similar items. These have also met with limited success. One option that you should consider if you really want to give up smoking is using hypnosis.

There are many misconceptions associated with hypnosis and that has kept some people from trying to use it to kick the habit. In essence, hypnosis results in an altered awareness and it appears as if you are in a trance or perhaps even asleep. There are also different types of hypnosis, including clinical and self hypnosis. These have been used for a wide variety of psychological and physical problems, including weight loss, repressed memories and various types of addiction.

When using clinical hypnosis for smoking cessation, the process is similar from one hypnotherapist to another. After putting you in a state of hypnosis, they will ask you to imagine outcomes from smoking that are fairly unpleasant. Perhaps they ask you to imagine that the taste of smoking is repulsive or that the smell is similar to the exhaust of a vehicle. These help to imprint something on your mind that can begin to change your perception of the habit.

The hypnotherapist may also take things a step further by helping you to identify the true issues with smoking cigarettes. These include the need for a healthy body and the fact that smoking is poison to the body. They may also impress upon your mind the respect that you should have for your body as well.

Along with using a form of clinical hypnosis, they may also provide you with options for self hypnosis as well. Self hypnosis is something that can be done at home without the use of a qualified hypnotherapist. It doesn’t put you in the same hypnotic state but it does allow you to alter your perceptions when you do it properly.

About three out of every four individuals is able to be successfully hypnotized. It is a method that has worked for hundreds, if not thousands of people who wanted to kick the habit. They were able to get beyond the habit, not only for a temporary amount of time when the hypnosis was taking place but they were able to give it up permanently.

houston hypnosis pendulumHypnosis isn’t some kind of magic trick that defies logic. It’s a tool that helps a person gain better control of their subconscious mind. However, many people still question its effectiveness, simply because they can’t “see” what’s happening.Hypnosis has been around for centuries, and it served as a pain killer back in the day. Before medicine made things easier, some patients were hypnotized for pain management. But this was just one solution hypnosis was used for, which is why the extensive practice of this art shows how effective it can be when used correctly.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis has so many areas in which it can be used, but to give you a better explanation of how it works the following example is based on hypnotherapy.

Your everyday life is based on habits and routines. Your subconscious is programmed to go through the same motions every day, establishing an auto-pilot rhythm so-to-speak. Once the habit has settled, it becomes second nature like breathing.

Even though there’s nothing wrong with a routine, certain habits can be damaging. Unfortunately they aren’t easy to change, because your subconscious has already invested a lot of time in the old one.

With hypnosis the aim is to change this habit at the source. It might not sound like a challenge to change a habit that is comfortable, familiar and easy. In reality it’s a lot harder. People who smoke and binge eat know this better than anyone.

With a professional leading the way, you will dig into your subconscious and use suggestions to change a specific habit.

What Does Being Hypnotized It Feel Like?

Contrary to popular belief, you’re not asleep when hypnotized. You’re simply very relaxed and your conscious mind doesn’t filter what goes through to the subconscious.

For the most part it will feel like a very relaxing daydream, which you might not remember depending on how deep you go.

A Landmark Study Has Found Self-Control to be One of the Most Important Predictors of Success – Here’s How to Increase Self-Control In Children

The need for self-control can feel like a tease at times and a bit of a pity, but its influence is spectacularly powerful. A landmark study conducted over three decades has found that the level of self-control children have as five-year olds, is one of the greatest predictors of their health, wealth and success as adults. Knowing how to increase self-control in children can help them on a path that sees them thrive.
 The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a New Zealand study, has received international praise for the treasure trove of data that has emerged out of it. Researchers followed 1000 children from when they were born to the age of 32. Children who had higher levels of self-control at age five were more likely as adults to be healthier, wealthier, and less likely to have an addiction or a criminal conviction.

A little bit about the study. (Because it’s fascinating.)

The research has given us remarkable insight into the behaviours and qualities in childhood that will influence the course of a child’s life. The effect of self-control was profound.

By the time the children were adults, children with the lowest self-control (compared to children with the highest self-control) were more likely to:
  • have multiple health problems (27% compared to 11% of their less impulsive peers);
  • earn a low income of less than $20,000 per year (32% compared with 10%);
  • have a criminal record (43% compared to 13%).
  • have an addiction to multiple substances (10% compared to 3%).
And then there are marshmallows.

The findings on self-control from the Dunedin study are in line with the famous Stanford marshmallow study – an ingenious little test of self-control that was put to a group of 4-year olds in the late 1960s.

One by one, the children were told they could eat one marshmallow right away, or wait for fifteen minutes and have two. Fifteen minutes is like forever in four year old time, but as all small children know, two is infinitely better than one when it comes to delicious things. They tried all sorts of tricks to stop themselves from eating the marshmallow before the fifteen minutes was up. The most successful children distracted themselves – they looked away, played with something else, talked quietly to themselves, sang, and made up games with their hands and feet. Some even tried to fall asleep.

Follow-up studies over the course of their lives revealed that the children who were able to avoid temptation were healthier, had greater success at school and then in their careers, and had stronger relationships.
